Betaine is a naturally occurring trimethylated molecule of the amino acid glycine found in many healthy foods such as whole grains, spinach, broccoli, shellfish and beets. A long-time beneficial staple of Mediterranean diets, betaine has recently been the subject of numerous studies demonstrating benefits to overall health and performance.
Betaine is also known as:
Clinically-validated human trials have demonstrated that natural betaine can lead to improved athletic performance. The FDA has approved a health claim for the ability of natural betaine to reduce high levels of homocysteine and medical condition known as homocystinuria.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Synthetic betaine (known as trimethyl amine hydrochloride, TMA, or Betaine HCl) is often marketed as a substitute to the all-natural version and the labeling of these synthetic products is often misleading. These products have not been subject to the same stringent safety and efficacy studies as the natural ingredient such Betaine PURE.

Like these other compounds, betaine functions as a “methyl donor.” Betaine carries and donates methyl molecules to facilitate necessary chemical processes. The donation of methyl groups by betaine is very important to proper liver function, cellular replication, and detoxification reactions.
Betaine is closely related to choline. The difference is that choline (tetramethylglycine) has four methyl groups attached to it. When choline donates one of these groups to another molecule, it becomes betaine (trimethylglycine).
Betaine also plays a role in the manufacture of carnitine and serves to protect the kidneys from damage.
Betaine acts on a cellular level as an organic osmolyte that supports cell metabolism. Through this activity, betaine supports the protection of cells against dehydration and stress-related water loss. When supplemented in a beverage in conjunction with electrolytes, this combination will synergistically provide superior hydration to athletes.
All-natural Betaine PURE is readily bio-available and improve performance through:
Potential applications include:
All homocysteine in the body is biosynthesized from methionine, an essential amino acid found abundantly in meats, seafood, dairy products, and eggs. Betaine donates a methyl group in the biosynthesis of homocysteine back to the methionine.
Ideally, homocysteine is metabolized by the body as part of the process for creating essential hormones such as glutathione, serotonin, melatonin, dopamine, and adrenaline. Elevated homocysteine levels are the result, however, of a lack of necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients needed to metabolize homocysteine.
Additionally, in certain rare genetic conditions, the body cannot dispose of homocysteine, resulting in its accumulation to extremely high levels (homocystinuria).
Betaine greatly reduces homocysteine levels and improves health among people with homocystinuria as well as individuals with relatively mild homocysteine elevations.
In addition, betaine has been receiving increasing recognition as a nutrient necessary for the proper formation of the developing brain’s memory center.
It is important that prenatal nutrition products are formulated only using all-natural betaine sources such as Betaine PURE. The synthetic version of betaine (betaine HCl) has not been verified as effective in any research studies, and the synthetic version also carries with many side effects including nausea, diarrhea and vomiting and cannot be used by individuals suffers from acid reflux or stomach ulcers.
